Secrets Revealed - Learn How to Play Lead Guitar Techniques! (String Bending)

Today, I'll be elaborating more on string bending or bending for short. This happens to be my second chapter and if you missed the first one, it's concerning sliding.

String bending
String bending gives the guitarist the quality to make his guitar wail and cry. Throw in some distortion and it will sound real good. It also helps put some emotion into your playing style. If you want to know some guitarists who like to use string bending, go check out Steve Vai and Santana.

How do we execute a bend?
A bend can only make your note sound higher. This can be done by simply applying pressure to the string, picking it and then pushing the string upwards or downwards while still maintaining the pressure on the string. There are 2 types of bends; one is the half step bend while the other is the full step bend. When playing the half step bend, the end note should sound 1 fret higher than the old note. For a full step bend, it should sound 2 frets higher.

How is a bend indicated?
There are many ways to indicate a bend but the most pro seeing in my belief is this '^'. A curve line with a 'B' on it can also be used, or a upward arrow and '½' or 'full' to indicate its bend.

---------------- In this case, '5^(6)' indicates that it's a half step bend.
---------------- 1. Pick the 5th fret on the 3rd string
-----5^(6)---- 2. Without releasing the pressure, push the string up until it sounds like the 6th fret
---------------- 3. There you have it. A half step bend.
----------------
----------------

---------------- Alright, now '5^(7)' indicates that it's a full step bend.
---------------- 1. Pick the 5th fret on the 3rd string
-----5^(7)---- 2. Push the string up until it sounds like the 7th fret, while still holding the pressure
---------------- 3. There you have it. A full step bend.
----------------
----------------

String bending is very easy but it takes some time getting used to how much extend you will need to bend the string in order to accomplish the end notes. Remember, when you bend a string, bring your thumb up on top of the neck. It is easier to push the strings toward your thumb than away from it.
